Eastern Road, East N.P., New Providence
Description
FACT SHEET FOR “JOURNEY’S END”
“Journey’s End” was designed by the late architect Ian Allen and built in 1964 on a ridge eighteen feet above sea level, overlooking Montagu Bay. On the other side is a hurricane- safe canal. The house is 6,700 sq ft, and is of block and concrete construction and built with the finest materials. With the exception of the guest room it is unfurnished.
There are four bedrooms, each with complete bath. (The master bedroom has his and her complete bathroom/dressing rooms.) There is a powder room at the front entrance. In addition, there is a maid’s room and bath, and a 3-car garage.
An 8-ton central air conditioning unit supplies the living and dining rooms and kitchen; another 2-ton central unit supplies the family room; and all bedrooms have individual wall units.
The very large 130,000-gallon rainwater tank supplies all the needs of the household, including flushing and garden. The city supply is also available, but has never been needed.
There are electric roll-down shutters - for hurricane protection and sun control - throughout the house, with the exception of a few small windows which have plywood hurricane shutters. All windows and exterior sliding doors are brand new (shown in some photos provided).
A 12 KW diesel generator supplies electricity to the entire house, except for the 8-ton air conditioner.
There are two large picturesque terraces on the waterfront, and a patio on the canal side.
“Journey’s End” is part of a gated community known as Little Hermitage, comprised of four properties on the north side of the canal, and six on the south. The combined properties form Little Hermitage Ltd., which is responsible for the maintenance of the canal, road, gate, and liability insurance. The annual fee for this property at present is only $1,465.00.
The Real Property tax currently is $8,310.00 per annum.
The property, in excess of an acre, has 180 feet of waterfront on Montagu Bay, and 142 feet on the canal. The attractive wood-shingled boathouse, one of only five on the entire island, accommodates boats to 46 feet, and includes a large workshop and bathroom with shower.
